Greetings all,
Devotional thought: We have been setting up the church for VBS which has a high seas theme so the front of the church looks like a ship. The old tradition word for the worship place of Christians is a “nave” from the Latin word for boat. Why? Most say it is because on the inside of a traditional wooden roof looks like large boat upside down. I like to like it is because following Jesus is a wonderful adventure…heading out across uncharted waters with nothing to fear because Christ is with us. We live in a fluid culture where everything seems to be changing and there isn’t a lot solid ground to stand on. We can remain safely in the harbor and hope for the best or we can navigate our way with our charts and compass (the scriptures) and the north star (Jesus) to guide us. There is plenty of room on board and big world searching for good news.
We are forming a Men’s Group…the main purpose would be growing in our spiritual walk. The exact structure would be determined by the men who are part of the group, but would involve mutual support, prayer, Bible Study, some like of service project and most likely food. One suggestion was a monthly breakfast…our first one will be Saturday, August 21 at 8:00am at church
KornFest is August 21….we will be finishing up the float at 9am on Saturday morning and then gathering at 10:30am at the float to walk the parade (we are entry #41 for those who walked last year it is in the same place 1000 3rd Ave. E.) and hand out kazoos and invitations to come to Bridge of Life….remember to wear your Bridge of Life t-shirts (if you need one we have some at church).
Vacation Bible School will be held August 22-25 Sunday- Wednesday 6-8pm….you won’t want to miss our high seas expedition. For kids 4 years old – 5th grade. Bring a friend. It is FREE.
3-5 year olds? Indiana Hauser will be teaching a simple liturgical dance…that we will do in worship August 29….if you want to be a part of it we will practice for a few minutes each night before VBS at 5:30pm
Blessing of the Backpacks …School will be starting before we know it….So on Sunday. August 29 and Wed. Sept 1 we will have the “blessing of the backpacks” as part of worship…all students and teachers are encouraged to come for the blessing on the new school year.
Speaking of school year…it is also time to be buying school supplies to send to Lutheran World Relief. supply list for school kits or you can make a cash donation and we will buy supplies. We be putting together the bags and sending them in October, but the stuff is on sale now.
Sunday we will have more information on the Labor Day weekend canoe trip
The Jar fund (our special loose offering that we take at worship for special needs (affectionately called “bob”) will be shifting the next couple weeks in response to a need that Pastor Houa became aware of for a Hmong congregation in Thailand.
On the lighter side: from the Lock-in last week
